This is the most critical point for your safety. As nurserymen, we love plants, but we know that a pot can be replaced, a life cannot. When the storm starts, go back inside and close everything. The first 15-20 minutes of a mesoscale convective system are the most violent: it is during this phase that the most intense downbursts and hailstorms occur.

Follow Civil Protection guidelines: stay away from windows and glass doors, unplug electrical devices if you don’t have surge protection, and do not use running water. If caught outside in the garden, never take shelter under isolated trees or metal poles. Find a solid, enclosed shelter. If a branch is completely broken, make a clean cut with disinfected scissors just below the wound, trying to reach healthy tissue. Immediately apply a healing sealant to prevent fungi and bacteria from entering the open wound. If you don’t have sealant, a trick is to use cinnamon paste (powdered cinnamon mixed with a little water): cinnamon is a powerful natural antifungal that helps seal the wound.

If the branch is only partially broken but still attached, you can try to save it: reposition it correctly and secure it with grafting tape or paper adhesive tape. If the cambium (the vital part under the bark) is still in contact, the branch may heal in 3-4 weeks.

Destroyed flowers

Here you can be drastic. Remove all damaged flowers.
