1. Upside-Down PET Bottle

This is the classic method. Take a 1.5-liter bottle, make 2-3 small holes in the cap with a heated needle, fill it with water, and insert it upside down into the soil about 5-8 cm deep. Pros: Zero cost. Cons: If the holes are too big, it empties in a day. If too small, a vacuum forms and no water flows. Test it for 24 hours before use.

2. Cotton Thread (Capillarity)

Use the physical principle of capillarity. You need a bucket of water placed higher than the pots and a thick cotton thread (or wool). One end goes into the bucket, the other buried in the pot. Ideal for: Plants that need constant moisture without waterlogging. Limit: The bucket must be large and covered to prevent water evaporation.

3. Tray + Expanded Clay

Spread a 3 cm layer of expanded clay in the tray, add water until it almost covers the clay, and place the pots on top. How it works: The water slowly evaporates, creating a humid oasis. The plants will absorb moisture through the drainage holes. Warning: Do not leave the pots directly immersed in water without clay, or the roots will rot.

4. Terracotta ollas

5. Blumat Cones / Drippers

Small ceramic cones connected to a tube that draws from an external reservoir. They are more precise than a bottle because they regulate flow based on the cone's porosity. Perfect for: Delicate plants that tolerate neither dryness nor too much moisture.

6. Drip system with timer

If you have many plants on the balcony, this is the only way. A battery kit requires no electrical connection and draws from a reservoir or tap. Expert tip: Install it 3 days before to properly adjust the drippers. Each plant needs a different flow rate.

What NOT to do (and what makes you waste money)

There is no need to use ice cubes (they cause thermal shock), do not fertilize before leaving (it accelerates metabolism and water consumption), and do not cover plants with plastic bags unless you are an expert.

In our internal laboratory, we often test the "grandma's tricks" circulating online. Some are simply useless, others harmful. Ice, for example, is a common mistake: tropical plant roots hate temperature shocks. It releases water, yes, but it freezes the root tissues.

Another mistake is the fertilizer. Fertilizer is an accelerator. If you give nutrients to the plant, it will start producing new leaves and pumping sap faster, consuming the water reserve in half the time. Fertilize at least 15 days before leaving or wait until you return.

Finally, beware of ultra-expensive automatic systems if you only have 4 or 5 plants. Often a set of ollas or simple ceramic cones are more efficient, less prone to electronic failures, and definitely more sustainable.

How many days can an indoor plant survive without water?

It depends on the species and light. In shade and at 25°C, a Sansevieria lasts a month, a Pothos about 7-10 days, while a Calathea or a fern will start to suffer after only 3-4 days. Grouping them and moving them to the shade almost always doubles these times.

Does the inverted bottle system really work?

Yes, but it’s a rough method. It works well for 5-7 days on medium-sized plants. The secret is the size of the holes: too small and they clog with soil, too large and the bottle empties immediately. It’s essential to test it 48 hours before the actual departure.

Should I move the plants before leaving or is watering enough?

Moving them is more important than watering. Direct summer sunlight through glass creates a greenhouse effect that dehydrates leaf tissues faster than roots can absorb water. Shade is your best ally against summer death.

Do succulents need watering during vacation?

Usually not, if the absence is less than 15-20 days. Succulents and cacti are designed to store water. However, if you leave them on the balcony in full sun at 40°C, they can also shrivel. Move them to a bright shaded area and they will do great without water.

Can balcony plants survive 2 weeks in the sun?

Almost no potted plant survives 14 days in August sun without water. Evaporation in outdoor pots is too rapid. To save them, you absolutely must move them to the shade, group them together, and use an automatic irrigation system with a timer.

The real secret is that plants are more resilient than you think — if you put them in the right conditions. Don’t overwater: halve the amount. Shade, shelter, slow systems.
