How to care for Alocasia
How to care for Alocasia
Our tips for growing it healthy and strong
Alocasia, also known as "elephant ears," is a rhizomatous perennial that we love at our company for its large, decorative leaves. Native to Southeast Asia, this plant is a horticultural hybrid that brings an exotic, lush touch to your indoor spaces.
The right spot
Alocasia prefers bright but indirect light. Avoid exposing it to direct sunlight, which could burn its delicate leaves. Place it in a well-lit spot, but out of direct sunlight.
When and how to water it
Watering Alocasia requires care. From April to October, water when the top 5 cm of compost feel dry to the touch. In winter, reduce watering to a minimum to prevent root rot.
Temperature and humidity
Alocasia thrives in environments with minimum temperatures of 16°C. It's important to maintain high humidity to prevent problems such as brown leaf edges and spider mites. A warm, humid environment is ideal for this plant.
The right fertilizer
During the growing season, from April to October, we recommend using a general-purpose liquid fertilizer according to the label instructions. This will help your Alocasia maintain lush, healthy foliage.
The pot and soil
For the growing medium, choose a peat-free, well-draining compost for houseplants. A mix of 3 parts compost and 1 part horticultural grit is ideal for providing the right drainage and nutrients.
How to propagate it
Alocasia can be propagated by separating offsets or dividing the rhizome. These tasks are best done in spring, with rhizome division carried out in late spring or early summer.
Our final tip
Alocasia requires a little attention, but its beauty makes every effort worthwhile. Be sure to monitor humidity and avoid overwatering in winter. With the right care, your Alocasia will become a true green jewel in your home.
