Ananas comosus, commonly known as the pineapple plant, is a perennial plant native to South America. At our nursery, the pineapple plant is appreciated not only for its delicious fruit but also for its exotic appearance, which adds a tropical touch to any setting. It requires specific care to thrive, but with the right attention, it will reward you with its unique beauty.
The right position
The pineapple plant loves bright, direct light. To get the best from your plant, place it where it can receive plenty of natural light. If possible, a south-facing window is ideal. Remember that good light exposure is essential for healthy plant growth.
When and how to water it
Water the pineapple plant when the soil feels dry to the touch. During summer, this may mean watering every 7 days, while every 14 days will be sufficient in winter. To check the soil moisture, insert a finger into the substrate: if it feels dry, it is time to water.
Temperature and humidity
The pineapple plant thrives in an environment with temperatures between 18°C and 25°C. Avoid temperatures below 10°C. Ideal humidity is around 40% to 60%. Maintaining these conditions will help the plant grow lush and healthy.
The right fertilizer
During spring and summer, fertilize the pineapple plant every 30 days with a balanced fertilizer. This will help the plant develop healthily and vigorously, supporting the growth of the leaves and, eventually, the fruit.
The pot and soil
Use well-draining soil made of sand and peat to ensure the right balance of moisture and aeration. Repotting is not frequent, but make sure the pot has good drainage to prevent root rot.
How to propagate it
The pineapple plant can be propagated through crown cuttings. This technique requires some patience and care. Make sure the cuttings are thoroughly dry before planting them to encourage successful rooting.
