Ulmus parvifolia - The Chinese Elm, the Perfect Bonsai for Beginners

A 7-year-old outdoor bonsai, beloved in the bonsai world for its extraordinary ease of cultivation and naturally harmonious appearance. Ulmus parvifolia, known as the Chinese elm, captivates with its small, glossy leaves, bark that flakes to create striking decorative patterns, and its ability to form a dense, refined branching structure with relative ease. Ideal for both beginners and experienced collectors.

Important notes: The shape and dimensions of the bonsai are approximate (including the pot). The color and shape of the pot may differ from the photographs. As living plants, their appearance changes with the seasons; the images are therefore for illustrative purposes only and do not constitute a contractual commitment.

Key features

• Genus: Ulmus
• Habitat: Outdoors
• Leaf type: Semi-deciduous (evergreen in Mediterranean climates)
• Care level: Easy
• Approximate dimensions (width × depth × height): 28 × 26 × 27 cm
• Pot size: Under 16 cm

Interesting facts

Elm wood is extraordinarily resistant to water: if permanently submerged, it does not deteriorate. For this reason, it has historically been used to build boats, bridges, pile dwellings, dams, and carpentry structures in damp environments. An ancient tree with a history spanning millennia.

Position

In Mediterranean climates, it should be placed outdoors in full sunlight all year round. In colder areas, it may lose its leaves during winter, behaving like a deciduous tree, and then sprout again in spring.

Watering

Abundant in summer, moderate in spring. Avoid waterlogging: always check that the substrate does not remain excessively wet between waterings.

Pruning and shaping

Ulmus parvifolia responds particularly well to pruning and forms secondary branches very easily. Preferably prune in spring or late summer, leaving 1-2 leaves on each shoot. Wiring is possible all year round, with care during the faster spring growth.
